Your Marketing Budget Is Impacted by Your Personal Brand

Updated: Mar 9

How your budget is impacted by your personal brand

Yes, your personal brand impacts your marketing budget. You didn’t know? Oh, you're still stuck on being authentic, huh? Sweetheart, that’s so 2023. You’re convinced that buying ads works better than building relationships. As the Founder of a creative or consultative business and who’s been in the game for a minute, are you feeling the effects of not being the flavor of the month anymore. Spend more, get less?

Are you feeling queasy about your future because you started your business before social media took off? It was comforting not knowing how many people were doing the same thing as you. But now you know and the ROI on your ad spend is feeling like a waste. Like everything else, businesses mature, existing clients know you and the horse you rode in on, you trust your team of folx to get shit done. And yet, shit’s not right. You’re making money but you can feel the subtle decline in business.

Open your laptop and it’s easy to focus on outside factors—market saturation, more folx in the game, and yes the economy. Yet, when you look internally you think it’s a price thing or you need to add additional services. I promise if you’re as good as you once were, the opportunities and threats aren’t all external.

I’ll be the first to admit the lines between personal and business branding are blurred as fuck. They’re not quite as blurred as the one between personal life and personal brand, but that’s for another time. People want to hold people accountable, not companies, so they follow the leader. In this case, the Founder or the personal brand.

When the personal brand is misaligned with the business brand, it impacts the marketing, the client acquisition, and the overall brand perception. The relationship between your personal brand and business brand is symbiotic—what happens to one will inevitably affect the other. Personal brand notwithstanding, think about how many Founders have been fired from their own companies.

So let’s dig in on how your personal brand and leadership can shape your business's future, why boldness is key to reinvigorating your brand, and how your marketing budget can be more effectively aligned with these insights.

Consider The Interdependence Between Personal and Business Brand

Unless you’ve been under a rock, you know about branding. But if you’re how I used to be, you didn’t think about it strategically. And my marketing knowledge didn’t extend beyond buying ads. In retail a good product will sell itself. The same doesn’t hold true for creative or consultative services. Branding takes on an even deeper significance. And your personal brand is much more influential.

The interdependence between the personal and business brand means that how your clients and the market perceive you as an individual will directly impact how they perceive your company. If you're a consultant, designer, or agency owner, you are often the face of your business. Clients don’t just buy into your services—they buy into you. And if all you show them is your pic and bio on the about page, they have nothing else to go on. For all they know, you could’ve bought the business.

So when your personal brand is lacking and less visible, your business brand may follow suit. You fixate on a audience persona and the ideal client instead of building based on what you bring to the game. This is particularly true for mature businesses. Hiding behind the fictitious personas of the brand and ideal client requires more ad spend every year.

On the flip side, if your personal brand were at the forefront, folx would be more inclined to invest their time and money. That means your client acquisition cost go down. Your personal brand can serve as a jump start to reinvigorate your company's momentum. Your personal brand will not only be the spark that rekindles your business’s growth, it can open doors for expansion. But how exactly does this affect your marketing budget?

Reimagine Your Personal Brand

Your brand leadership is the cornerstone of both your personal and business brand. As a brand leader, your decisions, actions, and how you present will either strengthen or weaken the perception of your business. If you’ve been in the game for a minute, you may have developed routines or strategies that worked in the past, but that doesn’t mean they will continue to work in the future. In fact, some of these habits could be contributing to the slight but noticeable decline in your business.

One of the best ways to break out of this rut is by being bold—both in terms of leadership style and personal brand. Boldness in leadership means making decisions that may feel uncomfortable at first but will ultimately have significant impact in the long run. It could mean embracing a hidden talent, shifting the direction of your business, or even stepping into new areas of thought leadership.

Being bold with your personal brand might mean sharing your story in a more genYOUine™ way, positioning yourself as a leader in your field, and offering your expertise in ways that actually reaches folx. Potential clients want to know that the person behind the business is still growing, learning, and evolving. If you're not bold enough to showcase that evolution, your brand may start to feel stagnant.

For example, playing it safe with your content—posting only when you think it “fits” the ideal client narrative—this may be the moment to boldly step outside the box. Share a different perspective based on your lived experience, experiment with innovative content, or start a whole new conversation that positions you as a thought leader in your industry. This is where brand leadership becomes crucial. Your clients and potential clients look to you for inspiration, and boldness is key to re-establishing your authority.

The Impact of Personal Branding on Your Marketing Budget

Now, let’s get to the nitty gritty about how your personal brand directly impacts your budget: marketing expenditures.

When you have a genYOUine™ and bold personal brand, it can significantly reduce the need for traditional marketing spends. Here's why:

Organic Growth and Word of Mouth

  1. A strong personal brand leads to better organic growth. Clients who are drawn to your leadership, expertise, and youniqueness will naturally share your services and recommend your business. Word-of-mouth referrals are invaluable, and they often come at no extra cost. If your personal brand is genYOUine™ and relatable, your client base will feel compelled to tell others about you. This reduces your reliance on paid ads and influencers.

Lower Client Acquisition Costs

  1. With a bold personal brand, your reputation precedes you. Potential clients are more likely to approach you, even before you launch a marketing campaign. This can lead to a significant reduction in cost per acquisition (CPA). When you’re known as a leader in your field, people come to you—not the other way around. In fact, studies show that businesses with a strong personal brand can spend up to 50% less on customer acquisition while maintaining steady growth.

More Effective Content Marketing

  1. A well-established personal brand means you already have content that resonates with your target audience. You’ve built credibility over time, and your voice is recognized. This makes content marketing efforts more effective, meaning you don’t have to pour money into ads to get your message across. Your audience is already engaged, and when you share genuine, valuable content, it amplifies the trust and loyalty they have toward you.

Marketing Strategy Alignment

  1. The interdependence between your personal brand and business brand means that any marketing strategy you implement should align with your personal values and vision. This creates a clearer, more focused marketing message, which makes your overall strategy more efficient. Instead of spending time and money doing A/B testing, you can invest in strategies that genuinely resonate with your audience, maximizing ROI. If your personal brand is strong, your business marketing will naturally follow suit, reducing the need for extensive trial-and-error.

  1. When you’ve built a bold and genYOUine™ personal brand, it opens doors for partnerships and collaborations with other like-minded leaders and businesses. These partnerships can lead to co-branded initiatives, speaking engagements, joint ventures, and media opportunities that further enhance both your personal and business brand visibility. The best part? Many of these opportunities require minimal investment, yet they can yield significant returns.

Aligning Your Marketing Budget with Your Personal Brand

To truly maximize the impact of your personal brand on your marketing budget, you gotta realign your strategy and resources. Here are some actionable things you can do:

Audit Your Current Personal Brand

  1. Take a step back and check out where your personal brand is positioned today. Are you showing up as a leader? Are you sharing your expertise in a way that feels genYOUine™ and YOUsable™? Are you showcasing boldness in your messaging? Identify areas where your personal brand can improve and begin working on those gaps.

Invest in Content Production

  1. Allocate part of your marketing budget (that includes time) toward high-quality content production that highlights your brand leadership and thought leadership. This could include blog posts, podcasts, videos, or even a personal newsletter. Make sure your content consistently reflects your get down.

Revisit Your Client Acquisition Strategy

  1. Review your client acquisition methods and consider how your personal brand can play a larger role in attracting clients. If you’re still heavily reliant on paid advertising, it may be time to shift more resources toward brand-building activities that highlight your Younique Selfish Proposition™.

Collaborate and Network

  1. Get off your ass and find opportunities to collaborate with others in your industry who align with your get down. These collaborations can amplify your personal brand and drive down marketing costs by leveraging existing networks.

Courageously Reclaim Your Boldness and Leadership

At this stage of the game, the key to reversing any decline is to reassert your leadership and the genYOUine™ qualities that make your personal brand younique. The interdependence between your personal and business brand means that your actions and visibility as a leader will have a direct impact on your company’s future growth.

Ultimately, the decline you’re seeing may not be a result of external factors, but rather an invitation to reinvigorate your personal brand. Step into your boldness, embrace leadership, and let your personal brand drive the future of your business.
